How_To_Make_Burlap_Leaves

I decided to end the week with a quick fall DIY.  I shared these leaves in my Metallic Pumpkins giveaway post earlier this week.... If you haven't entered yet no worries there is still time; click here and enter to win a trio of pumpkins of your choice!  These leaves were super easy and can be completed in one afternoon.

Supplies

Burlap - I picked mine up at Target with the gold flecks
Mod Podge - Watered down glue would work too
Shapes of leaves
Scissors
Paint
Fine tip sharpie

I gathered leaves from the park, but you could also google leaf shapes and find a few samples.

Next I traced the shapes on my burlap as close as possible to minimize waste.  In order to keep the edges from fraying I lightly coated the edge of the shapes with mod podge.

Once dry, I cut out all my leaves.

Now for the interesting step.  I wanted to add color but didn't want to cover my gold flecks.  I mixed several colors together or reds, oranges, yellows, and browns to color the tips of the leaves.  Then I went back over the edges of the leaves with my finger and tipped them in gold for a little shimmer.  Once they were dry and I was pleased with the mottled colors I lined the leaves with veins.

White Chairs

June 25, 2015
I shared my master bedroom recently and though I should share a few of the other updates I have been doing around the house. We added these white chairs and this rug to open up the room a bit more.  Not that a 16 ft ceiling isn't open but the white brightened up the room.  In case you missed my bedroom reveal you can see it here, and my office here.  I thought I would share a few of the other updating that has been taking place in other areas of my home.  This past weekend I hung new wallpaper in the master bath, now I'm searching for the right area rug and a few pieces of art to finish that room makeover as well.  I'm a busy girl these days around the house it seems!

Master Bedroom Reveal

June 01, 2015

This room has truly been a labor of love.  I've put more thought into this room than any other room in my home.  Usually I can pull together the décor and finish a room up in a relatively short amount of time. . .not this time.  I had a vision for how I wanted my bedroom to look.  This design journey began in my head over a year ago with only a few minor idea changes; different fabric for the pillows here, all white bedding rather than the taupe linen duvet cover there.  All in all, for me, the most important detail remained the same - creating a calming and peaceful place to retreat and relax.

I have to always be considerate of the fact that this is not just my room.  To my surprise, Joe was completely onboard with the touches of pink.  He would not have been happy with a pink explosion!  We literally stripped the room, from the bed and wall color to the carpeting.  The only original pieces left in the room are our night stands.  However, I do want to replace them with mirrored chests to match my other pieces and as soon as I find them in the right size I will.

I can't tell you how much I love this wall color.  It truly lives up to its name, Versatile Gray from Sherwin Williams.  It is the same paint we used in my office which you can see the full design post of here.   I used the below colors as my palette for the entire room.  Soft neutral colors with a slight pop of color in the brighter pink pompom throw, the pillows and the abstract art.

During the building process, I had outlets installed for both cable and electric higher up on the wall so that they could be hidden by the television.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a way to hide the DVD or cable box so I made a sleeve out of matching linen fabric to cover the unsightly cords that otherwise stand out.

I tried out two other rugs in my bedroom before finally finding this one at Rugs USA.  This is not my first rug from Rugs USA, so I was confident I would receive a rug with great quality and color accuracy.  I was right.  Not only does the color coordinate with my room, I love how it feels beneath my feet.

This is my favorite corner to sit with my laptop, to read a book, or catch up on my reality TV. I searched and searched for a lamp perfect for this space and finally found one with a rectangle base and shade from Lamps Plus. I was looking for a lamp that would not protrude too far into the room so this rectangular shape was important to me.  A bonus with my lamp is it has a floor on/off switch!

Have you tried sleeping on a silk pillow case yet? If not, you should!  I have to admit what they say is soooo true.  It really does make a difference with your hair and skin.   There are several brands out there so be sure to research their silk content.  Slip Silk Pillowcases sent me this pink (of course) pillowcase and I am sold.  I will never go back to a cotton pillowcase.

Mood Board / Master Bedroom

May 04, 2015
Art
Happy Monday.  I spent my weekend in Tulsa and have a full heart after spending time with my family there.  If you follow me on instagram you know that no trip home is complete without stopping off to see Jill at Rustic Cuff.  I have lots of new goodies to share soon. Today I am sharing my Master Bedroom mood board.  If you have been following along with me for a while now you know I have been working on my Master bedroom.  Yes...I know I started it last spring, and yes.... I know this seems to be a long time, but trust me when I say I think it was worth it.  A few details changed from the original plan in my head and I am glad I was patient with the ideas.    I knew what I was looking for in the overall look and I wanted to be careful with the amount of pink I add as well as the shade.  It's almost complete and I can't wait to share it in the coming weeks!  Stay tuned!

DIY - Candy Corn Wreath

October 09, 2014

Wreath-fall-DIY

One of my favorite times to decorate my home is fall.  Notice I didn't say holiday because fall last thru three months and not necessarily for a specific holiday.  I use to deck my home out for each and every holiday when my boys where little.  If there was a holiday... chances are I decorated for it.  I no longer decorate as big or for as many holidays.  I still have many of those decorations and hope to one day pass the memorable ones down to each of the boys homes.  Heck I may be wasting my time and my daughter in law and future daughter in laws might think they're ugly, but I think they boys will be glad!

My sister and I got together this past weekend to make a fun halloween wreath and today I want to share it with you guys.  It was super easy and can be completed in one afternoon.   If you remember back in February I shared this DIY post for Valentines Day, and again in July this 4th of July DIY post.  Pretty much the same concept just a different shape and color!  So lets get started.

Supplies:
  • Wreath of your choice
  • Burlap
  • Glue (I used E6000)
  • Mini chalkboard (these came in a pack of four)
  • ribbon flower
  • chalk
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Paint  Orange, White, and Yellow
Cut your candy shapes out of your burlap.  If you are working with burlap yardage or pre cut pennants you will need to cut it into candy corn shapes.  Rather simple... just cut a pennant then round the corners! We cut two different sizes to vary on the wreath.

Once you have your candy shapes cut you will paint the candy shape in equal thirds each color.  I started with the yellow, then painted the white, then last added the orange.  Once they were all painted I went back over with the yellow to give a slight curve to the edges.  I didn't want straight color lines rather I wanted them to look like they slightly bleed together.

While your candy is drying add your ribbon and decoration to your wreath keeping in mind where your candy will go.  I glued this pre made flower clip onto the edge of my chalkboard for a cute look and attached it to my wreath.  Once all my candy was dry, I glued them to my wreath and all that was left was my message on my chalkboard. I wanted to write on my board with a silver sharpie rather than chalk but wouldn't you know it... I have every single color and size of sharpies but silver. So for now I used chalk.

What have you made lately?  I told my sis I need to come up with an idea for Christmas since I have made something burlap for so many other holidays!  Do you have any ideas?

I'm finally ready to share my office space with you.  I know I have mentioned it several times and I have even shared little sneak peeks before.... but today you get the whole shebang!!!! Welcome to my office, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!  I linked to all my product sources at the end of the post but If I missed something please let me know and I will try to recall the source for you. I posted here how we painted the striped wall.  I still love it as much as I did the day we did it to!

I recently completed the gallery wall next to my desk.  I had been gathering things that I loved for some time to hang on the wall and finally earlier this summer I felt happy with how it was coming together.  I hung them with the help of my bestie over the 4th weekend.  I love how I have just the right amount of space still on the wall in the event I come across a little something to add!  This is where I spend a lot of time working when I am at home.  We just love the space and the feel in the room when we are both working.  We placed our desk back to back to open up the room and it allows us to work facing each other rather than backed up, or side by side.  You can clearly see the invisible line down the room form her side... to his side....Ha!  There is a TV mounted on the wall in the corner up behind his desk so when we are taking a break from working at our desk we can catch a little something to watch.  The only thing that is left for this room to be complete is to find the right window covering.  I am leaning towards a pair of clean sheer white panels.  What do you think? Color on the window or white? There is a large picture window to the right of this image below as well as the one you can see.

I have collected paperweights for many years now and have them displayed in this antique curio cabinet that belonged to my grandmother.  My mom always finds uniquely detailed paperweights in Europe when she travels to add to my collection.  There is an art to blowing glass and not every paperweight is a collectable.

My Weekend

July 01, 2014
Remember when I posted about the painting mishap with the gray not blue walls?  Well I had enough of the blue... yes it took me over three years to tackle this repainting project, but I finally did it.  It started out as a plan to just do the hallway.  Simple enough and small enough.  But the problem is where the hallway ends and the great room begins the walls intersect into one.  I didn't really have that detail of the plan worked out just yet but all I knew was I was ready to paint the blue gone.  My son taped the entire hallway off and begin the project for me to help out.  I really appreciated his help especially since I ended up taking on the entire hallway, upstairs entry, downstairs entry, and the stairwell.  Yup... it all is connected.

The fist set of pictures is the hallway.  Simple enough right?

But then you get to the end and the ceiling pitches to about 16 feet.  See that in the first pic? Yeah, its way up there on a ladder.  And the second pic looking over the door is the main entry and that wall on the left, yup, that's a staircase!  And let's not even mention the ugly entry light shall we!
I painted, and stretched, and reached, and rolled, and cut in, and cut in some more until I was done.  I also was an advil popping fool at the end of every day this weekend.  These are the before and work in progress pics and I will be adding something new on the big wall  where currently you see the double flower pictures hanging over the stairs but not sure what yet.  Any suggestions?  I want something lighter I think than these bold flowers.

Oh and by the way.... Joe is on vacation visiting a family member and has absolutely NO idea I have done this!  Won't he be surprised!!!!  He  has been wanting it done but it seemed like such a huge chore working around and over a set of stairs.  I have to agree.... it was!  I am glad I like this color because I'm never changing it again!  You can see a little of the color in the top pics of the hallway, and as soon as everything is back in place I will share the finished pictures.

I also had my hair appointment this weekend.  I decided to cut 2 inches and she added some contrast to my highlights because it was seeming too bright.  I am so happy with how it turned out too.  What do you think of the color she added?  I think next time I will have her add a third color too... for just a little more dimension.

I have been super busy at night and on the weekends lately.  I have a list of things I want to do and it just seems to keep growing!  If you saw last week in instagram my prints arrived for my gallery wall and I cannot wait to hand them up this weekend.  My bestie is coming in town for the long weekend for some good girl time and we will definitely be hanging them all up!  I'm so excited to reveal a peek at my office.

So there you have it.  A packed two days full of color in my hair, on my hands and elbows and just about every where else, and those pretties framed for their new wall!

And before I go, here is a little 4th of July decorations I whipped up last weekend with my mom and sister!  Super easy!   For a complete tutorial read this post.  Its the same process, just different colors!

So what have you been up to?
