Things I learned being a Mom of all Boys

June 19, 2015
I have several friends that are Moms to all boys!  Boy oh boy, I can relate to these Moms!  In addition to being a Mom of three boys, I also have three grandsons.  So, I have a pretty good understanding of how life happens with all boys!   I decided to share some things I learned from my experiences.  It's easier to recognize these things now that they have all grown up!  I admit, I am a much calmer, relaxed, and laid back Mimi then I was a mom!  I guess there is something to be said for "you always get to send them home" !

Expect things to be broken.  I remember once having a vase on top of the piano with a floral arrangement in it.  The boys had, at some point, broken the vase but decided to carefully place the three broken sides back together so it appeared to be unbroken.  I was doing my normal straightening and cleaning and when I went to move the vase it neatly and ever so perfectly came apart into three sections.  Of course.... no one knew how it happened!

Plan on the unexpected.  You know the hobby rockets you can find at a craft or hobby store, my boys were fascinated with them.  My brother always enjoyed taking all the nephews out to a field close to my parents home.  Well, boys will be boys and mine sure were curious little guys.  I was in the kitchen when I heard this blood curdling scream and I took off towards their bedrooms.  As a mom, you know the difference between a "I'm hurt" scream, and a "you're not playing fair" scream.  As I rounded the corner, the hall was full of smoke..... now pure panic set in for me!  Screaming still taking place, and my other two boys now in curious mode as well, I quickly surmise the situation and  determine their is no need to vacate the house.  Still not sure as to what just happened, I calm down the screaming child as he professes that he too has no idea what happened!  "So all of the sudden your room fills up with smoke, you begin jumping around, and you don't have any idea how?" Hmmm.... I begin to smell something fishy here!  Clue one) As I look around his room I see these black marks all over the walls, corners, and ceiling. Clue two) Laying on the floor on the far side of the bed is a rocket.  Clue three) When I first came down the hall and found him, he was across the hall in his brothers room standing on the head of his bed against the wall!  Now I have an idea what happened, just not how. It took me a while to figure out all the details but to sum it up, he thought he would try and launch the rocket by sticking each of the igniter wires in the outlet.   I won't mention which of my sons did this stunt but I will tell you his nickname for a while was Rocket Man!

Clean is a state of mind.  No matter how much you clean and how often they bathe they will be dirt magnets.  Don't fight it... you won't win. Be prepared for bugs too!  Put them in play clothes when you are home or on an adventure and save the picture perfect clothes for just that - pictures!

No child ever suffered by replacing a holiday meal with cookies and candy. I used to fret about them not eating a healthy meal prior to all the holiday treats and candy.  I finally realized that if they miss a healthy meal and 4 or 5 days out of the year they eat dessert first, it won't harm a thing.

You will make several trips to the ER.  Just that.  There will be dislocated parts, and cuts that require stitches. . .maybe even a few casts.  But if you escape boyhood with only these minor occasions, count yourself lucky!

There will be love.  One thing is for sure, a brother's bond is a fabulous thing to watch grow.  I wish I could turn back time, if just for a day, to snuggle with these guys!

And if you're lucky.... one day those sweet little boys with dirty hands will grow up to be the best Daddy's to their own little boys.

And even grow to be taller than you too!

It's becoming increasingly harder to get all three of them together to take updated pics, but one thing is for sure..... I wouldn't trade being a mom to all boys for anything!

I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend enjoying Father's Day.

Dorm Room Essentials

September 08, 2014
School is officially back in session.  Your home is quiet and empty.... well for some at least!  If you're one of those that sent your daughter, sister, or maybe a niece off to college, right about now she is making new friends, hustling to class, and learning to live away from home for the first time.  Scary times for some, and others adapt like it's no biggie!  Sending her a care package with a few thoughtful gifts would brighten her day and let her know... hey you may be gone but not forgotten!! I always love receiving unexpected packages in the mail.  My mom recently came across a stack of letters I wrote to her when I was at summer camp and almost every single letter I asked her to send me candy! See... it started early for me! Here is a roundup of a essentials she will be happy to receive and her dorm mates will be jealous!

Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats

June 05, 2014
Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats

One of my boys all time favorite snacks are the Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats.  I can make a batch and it will be gone in a day they are that good.   Today I want to share this pure goodness with you and hope they become a favorite at your home as well.  Enjoy!

Rice Krispie treats

What you will need:

  • 1 C light Karo syrup
  • 1 C sugar
  • 1 C peanut butter
  • 6 -8 C rice cereal
  • 4-6 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 -6 oz butterscotch chips
  • 9 x 13 pan
  • Butter or margarine (to grease pan only)
Grease your pan with butter or margarine and set aside until needed.  Do not use pam as it will not release as well.

Place sugar and syrup in a pan large enough to hold the rice cereal when it's time.

Stir constantly until is reaches a rolling edge boil.  Do not over boil or the sugar will harden once the treats are made and you will never… ever… get your teeth thru them.  Yes I did it, but it only took once to learn that lesson.  You just want it to start a consistent boil around the edges of the pan.

Remove from heat and add the peanut butter.  Stir it in well.

Add the rice cereal and stir to coat all the cereal evenly.  Now I have modified the recipe here a bit.  My mom uses 6 cups of cereal and I think the original recipe calls for that amount as well.  I think they are a bit too gooey so I increased my cereal.   Just note that you can experiment with the cereal  amount between 6-8 cups.

Once you have the peanut butter and the cereal mixed well pour it into the greased pan and press it into the pan.  I have found the back of a greased spoon works well or a square of wax paper as the mixture is still very warm to use your clean hands.

Now, melt the chocolate chips and butter scotch chips together in a double boiler.  If you prefer a thicker layer of chocolate increase the quantities to 6 oz each. (Again, I have done both and this is purely a preference)   If you don't have a double boiler you may melt them in the microwave taken careful measures not to burn it.  You will need to microwave for about 25 seconds and stir, then repeat that process until melted smooth.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the top of the pressed PB treats and spread to cover them.

Now with melted chocolate or baking chips they do not set up at room temperature.  I place my dish in the freezer for a flash freeze of the chocolate taking careful notice of the time in the freezer.  NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTES!!!  You may also place the pan in the fridge if you prefer and leave them longer until the chocolate sets.

Cute them with a large sharp knife into squares and enjoy!

What are some of your favorite family treats?

This is my Year

January 06, 2014
Happy new year!  I have been taking a little break from blogging.  Honestly? Because it was pretty darn difficult getting to my office due to the fact there were 11 people in my home for the holidays. Yup, 11.

Three grandsons, three sons, two DIL's and a friend.    My home was full of laughter, games, big meals, wine, tons of toys, a few battles, (mostly between the two littlest grandsons)  but we survived, and I am slowly getting back to a routine.  I haven't worked a full week of work in almost a month, so this week may seem like eternity to me!!!

2013 was by far a terribly trying year for me.  I wanted it to end.  End, go away, and never to repeat itself.  There was the cancer diagnosis for my Mother, the ever trying antics of my youngest, (who by the way, will be 18 in two months, he reminds me daily).  There was worrying for my 21 year old and his family struggling to get on their feet and learn a few life lessons along the way, and they lived with me for the last three months!  ugh! I don't want to dwell on the year, but learn lessons from it, and move positively forward.

2014 will be my year.  I know it!  How? Because I have a plan.  My year to travel more, be more present, and getting back to being more spontaneous.  I will put more faith into what god puts in front of me, and know there is a plan he has for me too.  My blog anniversary was January 1st.  2 years! 2 wonderful and so rewarding years.  I have learned so much on this journey, and I am ever so grateful for everyone that has been on this journey with me.  I have made wonderful friendships with fabulous ladies around the country that I could never have imagined with this blog. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  You really do mean a lot to me, and I love not only what I share with you, but what you share with me.  I never imagined I would share my outfits with you, but with a little help from a few local blogger friends I did, and you all loved it.  It's not hard to look fabulous in a $500 dress with $900 shoes and a $2000+ handbag, but thats not reality.  At least not my reality!!!  It does however take some stylish thinking, and a few mixing and matching to pull together an outfit to fit your work environment and age. Thats what I hope to bring you more of this year.

That has been one of the challenges I have come across recently, dressing age appropriate but still very trendy and stylish. I'm not willing to shop Chico's,  and Forever 21  has never been on my list. That is my real life.

I hope you know that this blog is a very edited, a tiny sliver of my life.  Not all my friends even know I have a blog.

I hope you know that most blogs are heavily edited.

I hope you know that a portion of the hard, painful moments in my life involve people that I love. I don't share those things here because I want to protect them, not because my life doesn't have those moments.

I think its very misleading when bloggers post perfect pictures of their apartments, or life, and expect others to relate to them.  Real life means real pictures.  I am not the best at dressing my coffee table or prepping a photo shoot, I want to be realistic to my life.  I don't shop for flowers every week, rather monthly I like a fresh bouquet for the house.  And it would be totally a style shoot to dress my coffee table.  I live with all boys remember?

Sometimes I don't get dressed until 2pm on the weekends.

I hope you know that blogging about your life takes more than it appears to take. All those good, wonderful moments that are fun to capture and share, well those take time and forethought and editing.  I rarely instagram in the moment. Truth? Because I would  need to get readers out just to see what I was typing and sending.

I hope you know that I am a single working mother.  I am happily single in a committed relationship.

I hope you know that every relationship takes its fair share of work and has its fair share of arguments. I am in a passionate relationship.  Something I thought might never happen after a failed marriage, and a string of crazy, stalking, hilariously fun boyfriends, with a man I'm crazy about, who loves me more than I ever thought one person could. And we totally fight. About important things and not so important stuff too.  I once was told by a wise friend that when you loose the will to fight in a relationship, the relationship isn't worth fighting for.  We fight, and I 'm OK with it!

I hope you know that everyone who blogs is normal. And it's not all pretty pictures and roses, and what little consequence clothes actually are in the meaning of life.

I hope you don't compare real life to an edited one.

I hope you know how much I appreciate you.

I want to celebrate with you and have collaborated with some of my favorite people and companies to bring you some amazing giveaways in the coming months!  I have some changes to the blog coming soon too, a few design changes, and a new series.  So get excited, I am!!

Lets do this 2014!!

The Borrowed Jean Jacket

September 26, 2013
Remember when I borrowed this jean jacket from my son here?  Well, he let me borrow it again!  A vintage denim Levi's jacket with the sleeves cut off!  Oh how I wish I could go back in time and shop my high school closet!  I would have so many cool things that are back in style!  Lesson to all you younger gals, pack the classics, and wait!  I paired my Cake for Breakfast tee in a bit of an edgier style over the weekend. I think the jeans and tee pretty much rock it without a lot of accessories needed.  What do you think?

Tee Cake For Breakfast c/o, Jeans Target, Shoes Ann Taylor, Clutch Kslademade, Bracelets Tiffanys, Bruce Glen, sunnies Chanel, Watch Michele.

Don't forget, today is your last chance to enter to win an Ampersand tee from Tessa just like this one.  Enter here!  Good luck!

Weekend Love

August 19, 2013
I wish my weekends were longer, but don't we all?!  Happy Monday friends. I had a heart filled weekend for sure.  My oldest son and his family came for a visit on Saturday.  My oldest grandson begins kindergarten on Monday and he is so excited.  I had all three of the babies saturday and we set up every little tykes toys in the backyard and the kiddie pool for them to play in.  They played for a while, but what hey really wanted to do was play with all of my toys in the house!  I saved the best of the toys from my my boys were little, and they had so much fun building star wars, G I Joe's, and Batman's.

These little guys sat and played for hours with my toys.  The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed the cooler temps in the garage sitting around visiting, and swinging the boys!  We hung a swing in the third car stall of the garage and it is perfect entertainment in the shade!

Leaning over the edge of the G I Joe tub exploring, creating, and imagining!  Just like his daddy did when he was that age.

My view of happiness!

Last weekend when my sis in law and mother where visiting, one of them asked if B had crawled into the dog kennel yet?  He had not.  Mostly he is interested in playing in Teddies water bowl if you don't pick it up fast enough, and just playing with the kennel door.  Well, it finally happened.  We turned around from preparing lunch to see the back end of a diaper sticking out of the kennel.  He crawled himself in, and attempted to turn around, only to get somewhat stuck. Haha!  It was funny!  I'm sure this won't be his last attempt at the kennel!! Hard to believe this little fella turns one in three weeks!

I did finally get tons of photos edited and have plenty to share this week.  The weather has me thinking fall, and its so weird to wake up to 60 degrees in the mornings, and 80's for the days high.  They say this week will heat up into the 90's again, but we'll see!  How was your weekend?  Are you temps unseasonable too?

A glimpse of the Holiday Weekend

July 08, 2013
Happy Monday my dear friends!  How was your holiday weekend?  It feels like I have been gone forever!!  I know I was taking Mondays off, but I wanted to share my long weekend with you today, and tomorrow a full recap of the events!

Weekend Recap

June 18, 2013

What a great weekend!  It was jam packed for me that's for sure.  Friday evening was spent downtown at the Boulevard Brewery.  It is a local  brewing company that gives plant tours.  One of my neighbors volunteers for the company and on occasion host plant tours.  We rented a bus to transport us downtown.  Smart idea when you have 25+ people drinking at these events and then needing to get home!

Now if you know me, then you know I hate beer.  I don't like anything about it, and have on several occasions attempted to find a beer I would like, to no avail.  So it seemed Like I would be a sober duck in a pond full of drunk fish!  I even considered taking a flask, but that was only going to last so long before I would run out!  I did attempt to drink a beer, and still stand strong on my dislike of beer!  I was in luck,  Boulevards make wine!

It was a fun evening, and they have a great bar..... if you drink beer.  Oh, and its free too!  Everyone pitched in and brought a little something to eat while we mingled, then our lovely tour guides took us around to various area of the plant.  We even got to go to the roof for a spectacular view of the city!

Some of these guys were even double fisting it!

My Saturday was a busy day as well.  I drove to Ft. Riley for my sweet grandson's 5th birthday celebration!  It was the first time to visit their new house, and it was wonderful.  I took both my other boys, and grandson to spend the day and the cousins had a great visit.  He is really big into Lego's and his cake was adorable!  And what 5 year olds birthday isn't complete without a piñata!

The superman birthday boy!

I couldn't let the day go by without a photo of all three of my sweet babies!  What I didn't realize was they had another idea in store for me!  Let me tell ya, it was no easy task and believe it or not, these ARE the best ones! The goofy smiles of a 5 year old, the too tired 2 year old who just wanted to talk on his phone with Mimi, and a honery 9 month old who would. not. sit. still.

Maybe next time!  Isn't there a special place in heaven for a mother of all boys, AND all grandson?  There should be!!

Four Favorites//Maxi Love

March 13, 2013

Happy Wednesday lovelies!  This weeks four favorites are exactly where my head is!  Ready for maxi's and spring weather!  With only a few days of daylight savings time, and the extra hour of daylight already it has me ready for warmer weather!  I love maxi dresses and these are perfect for me!  A good maxi, and a light shawl can transition you right into the summer while you work on adding a little color to your legs, and we all know we still have arctic white legs!

The quote is #4 of my favorites this week.  I love these words, and truly believe in them.  If you're not in love with your life, then what are you wasting it for?  Make the change, find your passion, and live your life in love.  Life is not a dress rehearsal, take center stage, dress up for no reason, and dance in the rain!  I am reminded today, that I am not getting any younger.  My baby..... youngest of my boys turns 17!  Happy Birthday to my sweet boy, who is taller than me, too cool to kiss his mom in public, and who's wings to leave the nest are growing faster than I want to admit!

Don't forget to see Ashlyn and Kristin's four favorites!

What a Weekend

March 05, 2013
Hello my friends!  I am late on getting this post up as I was out of town all weekend and traveling late Sunday night, so better late than never I guess!

So many things happened over the past couple of days I am not sure where to even begin, so I am just going to jump in and hope I don't ramble!

Friday kicked the weekend off with a little mishap! My #2 son had a slight fender bender in his brother's car.  No one was hurt luckily, but now I have one car in the shop.  We packed the car, and headed south at 6am Saturday morning to Tulsa to see my oldest son and celebrate one of my grandson's birthday!  He turned two on Sunday, and we had a little party for him Saturday afternoon with my family.  It was a great afternoon, and it was so good to spend time with my Texas (soon to be Kansas) grand babies!  The weather was so beautiful and warm, well at least warmer than Kansas.  I spent Saturday afternoon running errand and shopping with my mom, and we even had a personal driver in a Daimler limo for the afternoon!

On Sunday, I meet up with a couple of blogger friends!  It was wonderful to connect in person because up until Sunday, We had never formally met!  Gotta love bloggers, and their social networking skills! I can't wait to share some exciting things that I lined up with one of my home town friends too!

The high on Saturday and Sunday in Tulsa was 63, and as we drove north to home we watched the temperature drop to 37 by the time we arrived home!  It really has made me anxious for spring now!  Snow is still on the ground here in heaps, so there is a ways to go for it to even look like spring.  It's hard being gone for a few days and out of touch with your social media, but at the same time it is refreshing to not be attached to your phone!  I am catching up on emails, and blog post, and my Monday nights are always the hardest  because my housewives are on, and now I am hooked on Vanderpump Rules after that!  Oy!

But Look out Tuesday, I am coming at ya!  What's new in your world?

Growing up

January 07, 2013
Happy Monday!  How was your weekend?  Mine was busy, busy!

I kept my grandson Friday night for a little sleep over with Mimi!  whew........ let me tell ya, I know why you have babies when your young!  That little stinker fights his sleep hard.  He fell asleep in his swing about 8 and I carried him to his crib to finish sleeping.  I thought he may wake up before bed time and I can feed him, or he may push on into the middle of the night. He woke up at 10:30 and I thought this was perfect.  I would change him, fed him and right back to sleep he will go until hopefully 4 or 5.

Haha........  He had other plans for me!  He coo'ed , laughed, and even babbled at me all the while I was silent.  I was hoping he would get the hint this was NOT play time!  I walked, rocked, swayed, you name it but he would have no part of being horizontal.  Mind you, the time is now midnight!  I laid him down several times for him to roll around, fuss, then full on cry, only to be scooped up again so as to not wake the rest of the house.  I carried him down to swing again confident that would work!  As I sat there at 1am watching him swing wide eyed, I remembered all the nights I sat up with my own babies.  Somewhat wishing they would be at the next stage or phase. I was lucky, all my boys were good sleepers, and always slept in their beds.  I think all parent wish for the next milestone though!

I was flooded with memories and feelings, and it was so warm.  So what I was going to be tired tomorrow, or that I might be up again in a few hours.  You see, it made me realize just how fast the time does go by.  I took my youngest son, (17 in March)  to get his permit Friday afternoon and that teared me up as I watched him sit and take the test, then proudly get up and receive his permit certificate.  He beemed as we walked to the car.  His car.  He will be driving by himself in March, and my baby is growing up.  I cannot turn back time, or stop the process of growing up.  But what I can do is treasure the moments as they come.

So you might be asking me about now how did I finally get little man to sleep at 1am?  I fixed him a bottle and topped off him tummy.  He drifted off to sleep in my arms, and I sat there holding him and watching him sleep, in no hurry to put him in bed.  That was a moment I will not get back and I wanted to hold it for a while!  Sleep will come for me when he is home!

A quote that hands on my office wall reads,

"I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived the length of it.  I want to have lived the width of it as well"
Diane Ackerman

That is how I feel about 2013.  I will be living this year and embracing every moment!   What are your aspiring for the year? I would love for you to share.
